As the Small Cat Crisis continues to be an issue both in the United States and globally, we want to offer resources to help create change.
The Small Cat Crisis defines the influx of small wild and hybrid cats in the hands of the general public. It’s comprised of a web of issues, encompassing the ever-growing popularity of wild cat hybrids to the surge of wildcats as pets on social media.
The Wildcat Sanctuary has witnessed the reality of these issues from every angle. Below is a comprehensive resource guide for those wanting to learn more about the Small Cat Crisis.
Hybrid Cat Ownership
Hybrid cat ownership can be a massive challenge and ultimately is why we have nearly 50 rescued hybrid cats in our care here at sanctuary. Hybrid cats are exactly that— a mix between a wildcat species and domestic cat. A number of popularized cat “breeds” are actually hybrids. Most notably, Bengal cats and Savannah cats are hybrids and even the “domestic” individuals carry the genetics of their wild ancestry.
We receive multiple calls a week from people looking to surrender their hybrids. But why is this happening when they continue to grow in popularity? We find the issue often starts with breeders inaccurately marketing these cats and looking to make a profit.
The demand for hybrid rescue has gotten so big, that our sanctuary has had to build Catio Town to provide sanctuary for so many surrenders.

Testimonials from other Hybrid Owners is available here: First-Hand Stories from Hybrid Owners
We appreciate owners who choose to keep their hybrids for a lifetime. Ultimately, we do not want more cats displaced if they don’t have to be.
